Stressing the need to improve practical knowledge for qualifying in UPSC exams, V Irai Anbu IAS, Secretary to Government, Personnel and Administration Reforms Department, asked civil service aspirants to focus on qualifying and not clearing the exams.
There is no such thing as ‘passing’, you have to qualify, and that’s why we call it as Competitive Exams, said V Irai Anbu, at the inauguration of UPSC Civil Services Free Coaching Centre for Women organised by the Queen Mary’s College, here on Friday.
“Theoretical knowledge will not provide good results always until you apply them in practical,” said Irai Anbu.
In his address he said, “To qualify in the civil services exams it requires extensive reading on various subjects. For each and every question, you have to arrive on your own conclusion. For instance, if there is a question of reservation policy, many candidates write the merits and demerits of the reservation. But none has the ability to conclude their own, whether the policy is good or bad. Since your answer is going to be unique it needs a skill of specialisation. In the personality test, the examiners will look out for your presence of mind.”
He also explained the examination structure and the preparations a candidate should deserve.
The coaching centre was started in the year 2001 to provide training for UPSC examinations exclusively for women candidates. It has to be noted that, there are only two coaching centres in Tamil Nadu supported by the State Government to train the women students, one located at Madurai Meenakshi Government College for Women and the other on Queen Mary’s College campus. Speaking to City Express, Dr N Amudha, coordinator, UPSC Coaching Centre, said, “Every year 60 students from across the state are selected through an entrance exam followed by an interview. This is a free of cost coaching centre funded by the government. Till date more than 600 graduates have completed this training, and most of them secured employment in banks, colleges, research institutions and other government offices.” The centre has a library containing 3,000 volumes of books and computers with internet facility. The trainers of this programme include former IAS officers, experts from various subjects and professors. Frequently, eminent guest speakers are invited to address and encourage the candidates.
