Srinagar: A 'floating' post office on the Dal Lake in Srinagar will soon be a new tourist attraction as the Postal Department of Jammu and Kashmir plans to open it along with several other post offices across the state.

Apart from a 'floating' post office on the Dal Lake, a 'tourist post office' will come up in the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir. The Department is also working on the 'next day mail' delivery system between the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu, Chief Post Master General, Jammu and Kashmir Circle, John Samuel told reporters in Srinagar.

He said the floating post office at Dal Lake, which is the star attraction for tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley, will function from 10 am to 6 pm on all days including Sundays during the tourist season.

"The speciality of this post office will be to book letters with 'special cancellations', meaning pictures instead of seal of the post office after receiving the letter," Samuel said.

Apart from sale of 'special cancellation envelopes', special covers with pictures of tourist resorts would also be sold at the post office, he said.

Samuel said this new feature is being introduced in Srinagar for the benefit of the tourists.

He said the Department of Posts will also open a post office at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg named 'Gulmarg Tourist Post Office'.

"The objective is to provide 'special cancellation' to the visiting tourists and to attract tourists through special envelopes containing pictures of Gulmarg and other tourist destinations," he said.

All the district and tehsil headquarters would get the mail the next day for which a new mail line has been introduced from Srinagar to Trehgam via Baramulla and Kupwara covering all the important post offices between the lines, the Chief Post Master General said.

He said the Department is working on the 'next day mail' delivery system between Srinagar and Jammu also. "In Jammu and Kashmir, except Leh, the mail will be delivered within two days," he said.

Samuel said the Department of Posts is also going to inaugurate a post office at Kargil in the frontier region of Ladakh shortly.

Work on the infrastructure for the post office is almost 80 per cent complete, he said, adding that projects for post offices at the famous hill stations of Sonamarg and Pahalgam are also in the pipeline and they would be set up in the near future.
