THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fisherman across the state joined by political leaders, social activists and others formed a human chain on Saturday, seeking protection to fishermen and their means of livelihood. The human chain was formed from Irayimman Thura near Kanyakumari and stretched to Manjeswaram. The unique form of protest under the aegis of Kerala Fishermen Coordination Committee was organised against the backdrop of recurring attacks and killing of fishermen who venture into the seas for fishing, by passing ships. Tens of thousands of fisherfolk joined the chain demanding strengthening of coastal security, scrapping of the order making the fishing zone in the Arabian sea as a high security zone and ensuring the passage of shipping vessels at 60 nautical miles and beyond from the coast. The demand for adequate compensation and security cover for those engaged in fishing activities was also raised. The function was held at the Sanghumugham beach here at 5 p m.
