Farmer suicides due to wrong policies of West Bengal: BJP

Kolkata: Slamming the West Bengal government over suicides of potato farmers, BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh on Saturday said that the deaths were due to wrong agricultural policies of the state government.

"It is due to the wrong policies of the state government that farmers are dying. Had they taken proper steps at appropriate time, things could have been sorted out," Singh said.

He cited West Bengal's decision to ban export of potato to other states as the main reason behind the problem. Several potato farmers had committed suicide, allegedly driven by financial distress after not getting remunerative prices for their produce in West Bengal, in recent days.

"Wherever BJP has its government, we have taken steps to cope with this problem. But the TMC government has totally failed to tackle it," Singh said. Singh listed out figures and statistics of other states to show how they initiated steps to help financially distressed farmers.
