CHENNAI: Former PMK councillor Manivannan, who was wanted by the police in connection with the murder of a youth, who had eloped with his daughter last year, was arrested on Sunday night.Manivannan went absconding after Bilal, a resident of Mylapore, was hacked to death by unidentified persons and his body found abandoned on Singeri Mutt Road in Mandaveli on Wednesday. Manivannan was suspected to have been involved in the murder as Bilal was in love with his daughter Deepa (name changed) and had eloped with her on December 2 last year. Manivanann was arrested when he stabbed Bilal’s brother Ahmed Basha during a counselling session held for both the families by the Mylapore police after the couple’s elopement. He was released on bail on Dec 24.After his arrest on Sunday, Manivannan reportedly told the police that Bilal and his daughter were traced and produced before a court. His daughter was handed over to him and his relatives. However, the couple continued to be in touch over the cell phone. On learning about Deepa’s continuing ties with Bilal, Manivannan said he engaged some henchmen to eliminate the youth. Special teams are now looking for the assailants.
