English Vinglish: Sridevi's 10 scenes to watch out for
Written and directed by Gauri Shinde, 'English Vinglish' is an emotional film and a perfect family entertainer.

New Delhi: A matchless cook, a caring mother, a perfect homemaker and an expert in making laddoos, Shashi Godbole’s character in ‘English Vinglish’ is so beautifully crafted that it looks very close to reality. Tired of becoming a butt of jokes at social gatherings, Shashi aka Sridevi decides to take up a crash course in English speaking. We know so many people who stick out like a sore thumb as they can’t speak proper English and Shashi brings to you their side of story.

Written and directed by ad filmmaker Gauri Shinde, ‘English Vinglish’ is an emotional film and a perfect family entertainer. The film has the same flavour of ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Paa’, as they were directed by Shinde’s husband R Balki. He is the co-producer of the film. Sridevi, who has done lively roles like ‘Mr India’, ‘Chandni’ and ‘Chaalbaaz’ in past, it’s great to see her in a mature role. While the critics and audiences can’t stop talking about Sridevi’s brilliant performance in the film, we bring to you the 10 best scenes of Sridevi you must keep an eye on while watching the film.

Shashi chai lana: Right from the beginning, Sridevi takes charge of the film. The opening sequence shows her getting out of the bed, tying her hair, making breakfast for her family and the moment she picks up her Hindi newspaper, her husband shouts, “Shashi chai lana.” The expression on her face is amazing and her simple yet elegant look grabs eyeballs.

Father kya hum Hindi mein baat kar sakte hain: Most of the youngsters do not like to go out with their parents as they are not as cool as they want them to be. When her daughter’s teacher starts talking in English at a PTA meeting, very sheepishly Shashi tells him, “Father my English not good.” He obliges her request and their interesting conversation will surely make you smile.

Befikar and bindaas Big B: R Balki is a self confessed Amitabh Bachchan fan and it’s no secret that he has a cameo in the film. Bachchan plays Sridevi’s co-passenger in the movie. Though they have just two scenes together, but Sridevi and Amitabh’s chemistry is beyond brilliance.

How are you doing Madame: I am doing...vegetarian. At a cafe in New York, Shashi Godbole struggles so much to order a sandwich and coffee. Sridevi is fabulous in the scene, which is also a turning point of the film.

Shashi the entrepreneur: While her husband wants her to stop her laddoo business, Shashi calls it her only hobby. Her family often makes fun of her because of the same. On the first day of her English class, she feels delighted to be called an entrepreneur. She repeats the word several times so that she can pronounce it correctly and tell it to her husband.

Language is never a barrier: Shashi’s classmate French cook Laurent has a soft corner for her. After saying no many times, she finally goes out for a coffee with him. Though they don’t understand each other’s language, but the conversation helps them in finding the answers they have been looking for.

Everybody likes compliments: When Laurent subtly confesses his liking for Shashi during the class, she simply walks away. When Laurent apologises to her, she says, “Itne din baad kisi ne tarif ki.” The smile on her face says it all.

That one moment: If you are a fan of typical Bollywood love stories, you will surely love this scene. Laurent takes Sridevi on the top floor of a high rise building; she slips and falls into his arms. That one moment makes her realise what she really wants from life.

The sangeet: Shashi goes to New York to attend her niece’s wedding. At sangeet, she is seen grooving to the Marathi song ‘Navrai Majhi’. For all those who are a fan of her dancing skills, this is probably the best moment in the film.

And the speech: The climax of ‘English Vinglish’ leaves a lump in your throat. Every word and every expression of Sridevi in the scene is so balanced. Her transformation from a conscious housewife to a confident entrepreneur is so evident in the last scene.

So ‘English Vinglish’ gets a thumbs up from us, watch it for Sridevi’s unprecedented performance and beautiful narrative by Gauri Shinde.
