CUTTACK : Eminent personalities, celebrities and sports persons would soon be seen on the city roads in full uniform, managing chaotic traffic conditions as well as taking part in the surprise checks and associated regulatory matters. For the Commissionerate Police is all set to introduce the Traffic Warden system here to bring sanity on the roads. The traffic system is characterised by a sheer disdain for rules and regulations. As many as 250 persons, including prominent personalities, sahi chieftains, professionals, film stars, sports persons, retired administrators have been roped in for the initiative. They would function as traffic wardens with the objective of not only enforcing the rules and regulations more effectively but also persuade and inspire the common people to abide by the rules. The system involves the selected personalities in the actual traffic management. They would be provided with special uniforms for the purpose and would be required to dedicate a few hours at least once or twice a week in traffic management work. The work would be voluntary. It would have salutary effect on the road users. People would be more inclined to follow traffic norms. Cuttack would, in fact, be the first city of the State to introduce the warden system. Mooted by Commissioner BK Sharma, the system envisages the wardens to act as a bridge between traffic police and the general community. They would work alongside the traffic police personnel to monitor vehicular movement and road situations. What is more important is that they would actively take part in the education of the public in real-time road conditions. “They would first be deployed in major thoroughfares and crossings during the peak hours. A schedule would be prepared on the basis of which they would be rotated and posted,” said a senior Commissionerate official.
