Elections will be held before January 15: State Election Commissioner

State Election Commissioner Uddipta Ray said the dates for the civic polls would be announced as per orders of the Madras High Court, which has ordered the state commission to hold the elections before January 15.

Ray told Express that the dates would be announced within the deadline set for the elections by the High Court, in its order on Monday.

Earlier, Jagannathan, representing an NGO, had urged the state commission to declare the dates for the Civic elections to avoid confusion amidst rumours of a particular section keen on further delaying the conduct of elections.

Asked about the reservation system for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Caste women, general women Uddipta Ray clarified that the Puducherry government had issued Government Orders prescribing the number of seats that are required to be reserved and the tenure also.

The NGO worker said more funds should be sought from the Central government for the smooth conduct of the civic polls.

It may be recalled that the state election commissioner was appointed following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Puducherry CPM secretary, V Perumal with HC. The last local body elections were held in Puducherry in 2006 following a High Court order. The state local bodies term ended on July 13,2010.
