Lucknow: An eight-year-old boy was killed on Wednesday in a firing exchange between police and criminals in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura on Wednesday, police said.
As per reports, a team of police personnel acting on the basis of a tip-off arrived in Adooki village off the Mathura highway to nab a criminal. The accused began to open fire, leading to the police retaliating.
A bullet hit eight-year-old Madhav Bharadwaj in the head during the shootout. He was playing outside his house.
The parents of the victim immediately rushed him to the hospital but Madhav succumbed to his injuries.
The criminals, according to the police, were involved in a recent robbery and were hiding in the village. Senior police officials also said that a case has been registered based on a complaint by the family.
Taking note of the incident, UP CM Yogi Adityanth has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the parents.
Speaking to media, SSP Mathura, Swapnil Mamgai said, “It is an unfortunate incident, and I extend complete support to the family. The matter will be looked into by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who will examine the case from all angles and reveal if there was any negligence on behalf of the police. A post-mortem would establish whose bullet killed the child.”
Since the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government took over in Uttar Pradesh last year, at least 32 people have been killed in over 900 encounters.
The Chief Minister and top police officials, on various occasions, have stressed on the need for strict action against criminals in the state, blaming the previous Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government for going soft on them.
