Drunk driver may get 7 years to life imprisonment
Nooriya Haveliwala has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

New Delhi: The 27-year-old woman, Nooriya Havelliwal, accused of killing 2 people in a drunken driving incident on Friday, was taken by the police to various spots in the city to reconstruct Friday night's tragic events. She could face 7 years to life imprisonment if she is found guilty.

The Mumbai police began detailed investigation into the drunken driving incident which killed 2 people last Friday.

From the LT Marg police station Nooriya was taken to her residence in the plush Sagar Sangeeth society .

Next stop, was a house in Marine Lines, belonging to her friend which she had visited.

She was then taken to the Ghetto, a nightclub in Mahalaxmi where Nooriya partied for nearly 4 hours on Friday night.

She was also taken to an alcohol shop at Peddar road, from where she had picked up some beer and finally to the spot where Nooriya rammed her Honda CRV, at 120 kilometers per hour speed, into a police jeep and a bike.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Mumbai Police R K Padmanabhan said, “We are reconstructing the scene of crime to be doubly sure... to find the exact sequence of events, circumstances that lead to the incident.”

Around eight of Nooriya’s friends, including her boyfriend, have been questioned so far. Police are investigating if she had taken drugs.

“The samples of her nails and hair have been given for testing, in order to rule out/find out on the drugs intake angle. The vehicle has been in good condition and both the tyres were in top form,” said Padmanabhan.

Meanwhile, even though Nooriya is repenting her mistake, the consequences of her drunken driving are expected to last longer. As amongst other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) she has been charged with the non-bailable Section 304 of IPC - culpable homicide not amounting to murder. She faces a minimum punishment of 7 years and a maximum of life imprisonment.

The 27-year-old beautician, who was drunk, had rammed her car into a police jeep, a taxi and a motorcycle while on her way home to Colaba.

One of her victims was a police sub-inspector.

She's also charged with causing grievous injury which can fetch a 2 year jail term

Nooriya has also been charged for rash driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
