Don't blame Modi, likes of Sakshi Maharaj alienated liberal voters: Asifa Khan
As Satish Upadhyay says the state unit has taken the responsibility for the defeat. We believe in democracy and we have lost an important election.

(Asifa Khan is a BJP leader, Modi supporter and Muslim woman face of the party)

The defeat of the BJP in Delhi Assembly election is shocking. The scale of the defeat is really unexpected. We never thought that it would be a rout like this. There are too many reasons for this. Not just one or two. I disagree with the people who blame the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the debacle. In my opinion, Modi did what he could. As the Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay says the state unit has taken the responsibility for the defeat. We believe in democracy and we have lost an important election. We humbly accept the verdict of the people.

As I have said, there are many mistakes, not just one or two. We need to go through all of them and analyse it. The Prime Minister Modi himself will oversee such things. I must admit that the statements by the likes of Sakshi Maharaj have alienated the minorities and liberal Hindus. I repeat, not just minorities, also the liberal Hindus. In India, we rule by the Constitution. It should be followed by all of us. By making inflammatory statements, Sakshi Maharaj type cost us votes of all liberal voters. It is a lesson and we must be very careful in future.

Coming back to what went wrong in Delhi; I would like to say that many things went wrong. The local leadership failed to carry forward the messages of Modi. He led us from the front. But, the local leaders failed to mobilize the voters support for the AAP.

Some say projecting Kiran Bedi as the Chief Ministerial candidate was wrong. I don't know if it is true. I can't say in a hurry. When we do the postmortem, we will come to know about that. The BJP has got just 4 seats and I am shocked beyond belief.

But, I don't agree with those who attack Modi for it. Modi has been winning elections since 2002. He has won several elections for the party including the historic victory in the Lok Sabha election in May 2014. He did his best. But something has gone terribly wrong. It needs a thorough introspection.

A threadbare analysis of our strengths and weaknesses will help us to find out the truth behind our loss.

There is a big lesson for the Congress from the Delhi results. It has lost all Muslim majority seats which it won every time. Its stalwarts have lost badly. The Congress has fooled us for over 65 years. The so-called Muslim appeasement of the Congress is no longer appealing for the Muslims. They have rejected it. May be second generation Muslims have embraced AAP after the Congress betrayed us for decades.

The big lesson is - We should rule by the Constitution of India. It should be our Dharma. We can't allow fringe elements to dictate terms or derail BJP's core agenda and development policies.

I hope the BJP central leadership will analyse the results from all angles.

What's your reaction?
