DNA sampling can reduce Indias crime rate

Allowing the collection of DNA samples from the public and profiling them can go a long way in detecting and reducing the number of crimes, said K Ramanujam, Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu.

Inaugurating a Cont i n u i n g M e d i c a l Education(CME) programme on ‘Legal and ethical aspects of organ transplantation’ at Sri Ramachandra University on Sunday, he said, “In UK there is a high percentage of crime detection because they have a huge DNA sample of 60,00,000 with about 30,000 peoples samples being added per month.

But in India we are yet to have such a law.

” As portrayed in most American crime dramas on TV, forensic pathologists assist the police in crime investigation almost simultaneously from the very beginning, when the crime scene is first visited.

We do not have such a system in India and they get associated much later because of which they can give only an approximate opinion.

Referring to a few internationally famous crime cases, he said that forensic science can establish the guilt of one and innocence of another.

The programme was organised as part of a threeday national forensic conference in association with Tamil Nadu Medico Legal Society.

About 500 delegates from over 50 medical colleges from all over India participated in the programme.

J K Tripathy, Commissioner of Police-Chennai said a comprehensive law on organ transplantation has been available only since 1994 and the Tamil Nadu government is keeping a strict vigil on its implementation.

T K Parthasarathy, Pro Chancellor said that in spite of the best safeguard and procedures, some errors can take place in organ transplantation, and that CMEs like this can help doctors avoid such inadvertent mistakes.

Dr K V Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties said India does not have enough faculties in forensic science and it augers well that MCI has included ethics as part of MBBS curriculum.
