Ranchi: Proposals to offer jobs to Jharkhand's sports luminaries - cricket sensation Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Indian woman hockey captain Sumari Tete in the state police department have caught into legal wrangles.
The state government had announced it would appoint Dhoni as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and Sumari Tete as police inspector for their contribution to sports as representatives of the state.
However, official sources say the files concerned are moving from one department to another for a clearance by the finance, law and home.
The law department has raised some objections to their appointment in the police force and sought suggestions from the Advocate General Anil Kumar Sinha on the issue.
"An official of DSP rank is appointed only through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission. The post of police inspector is also not recruited directly. A police inspector's post is a promotion from that of sub-inspector," a government official said.
"There is no provision in the state to appoint sportspersons directly in government jobs exempting them from examination and interview," the official said.
According to officials, Sumari and Dhoni can be given jobs in the police department if the state government makes provisions for appointing sportspersons directly to government jobs.
Dhoni is from Ranchi and Sumari is from Simdega district of Jharkhand.
Dhoni has already been given Rs 10 lakh and a plot of land worth Rs 40 lakh by the state government.
But Sumari Tete still faces financial bottlenecks. Her home is in a village where there is no bridge over the river, which she has to cross by ferry.
