New Delhi: He kills women, but doesn't touch their modesty. Neither does he rob. Three murders in a month, and he has already gained notoriety as Delhi's own Jack the Ripper. His modus operandi? Simple. He targets unsuspecting women and kills them in the early hours of the morning. And, allegedly, he carries a hammer.
The serial killer is one the prowl in a vast part of West Delhi and he has spread panic in the area. He has already turned into a serial killer after targeting as many as five women in the past two months. Two women survived to tell their horror tales. Of the three killed, all were found murdered under similar circumstances.
The last victim of the killer was 45-year-old Darshana, a former nurse. She was found killed in her room in the Baljeet Nagar area on Thursday morning. According to the police, Darshana's head was smashed beyond recognition. Neighbours found Darshana at her residence in the morning with head injuries and rushed her to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, the official said.
This was the fourth incident of a sleeping woman being attacked with a blunt object on the head in the area in a month's time. Out of the four, three have lost their lives.
There were similar incidents on August 8 and 10, in which two women were killed. Another woman suffered serious head injuries.
Locals said last year there were similar attacks on women and they fear that a 'psychopath' killer may be on the prowl.
The official said there was nothing to suggest that there was a serial killer on the prowl and they were investigating the case. He said in some cases of attacks, victims even refused to file complaints.
"As of now there is no evidence to suggest that there is a psychopath hammer man targeting women in the area. We are investigating the cases," he added.
In May this year, west Delhi police had arrested one Chandrakant Jha, who created terror by allegedly going on a killing spree claiming five lives and dumped their bodies in front of Tihar jail.
