In a shocking incident, a Metrowater employee and his wife were attacked inside their house by an armed burglary gang, which decamped with a huge haul of gold jewels, on Monday.
Sources said the burglars struck at the residence of Dayalan (52) on Senjiamman Nagar near Ponneri after he and his family members retired for the night after dinner.
Dayalan, who works as timekeeper at the Royapuram Metrowater Board , and his wife Navamani (48) were asleep in the front room, while their son Naresh was in another.
Navamani woke up when she felt somebody stepping on her feet. To her shock, she realised that burglars had broken into the house and raised an alarm.
Dayalan woke up and switched on the light. On seeing the couple, the burglars attacked Dayalan on the head with a crowbar, assaulted his wife and escaped.
A team of police officials visited the house and conducted inquiries.
The family claimed that the gang had decamped with nearly 80 sovereigns of gold jewellery, five kg of silver valuables and Rs 2 lakh in cash from the house. A bleeding Dayalan and his wife were admitted in hospital. Ponneri police are investigating the case.
