In a bizarre accident, five persons, including a woman City Corporation councillor of the AIADMK and her 23-year-old son, were killed at Naranamangalam on Tuesday.
They reportedly stood outside the omni bus they were travelling in while the crew attended to a tyre puncture when another bus collided with the stationary vehicle which ran them over.
The accident occurred at Naranamangalam on the Tiruchy-Chennai Highway near Perambalur.
Sources said the family members of the Corporation councillor for Ward 15, P Amudha (52), were travelling in an omni bus from Chennai towards Tiruchy. One of the tyres of the vehicle had a puncture when the bus was nearing Naranamangalam near Perambalur during the early hours of Tuesday. The passengers, including the councillor, got off the bus and were waiting outside, while S Dhanagopal (29), of Airport area, was replacing the tyre.
Suddenly, another omni bus bound for Tiruchy rammed into the stationary bus setting it in motion. The bus ran over the waiting passengers. Amudha, her son Anand (23), Perumal (55) of Tambaram Sanatorium area in Chennai, and his wife Amaravathy (45) died on the spot while M Vasuki (23) of Palani succumbed to injuries at the Perambalur Government Hospital.
Manimekalai (34) of Tambaram, Senthil Kumar (31) of Thanjavur, Hariharan (23) of Tiruchy, Senthil Kumar (25), Nageswari (47) of Madanapuram, Karuppiah (26) of Kunnalampatti, Rajkumar (18) of Mayilaipatti, Murugan (33) of Tambaram, Palaniappan (55) of Pudukkottai and Tharasingh (35) of Tiruvarur sustained serious injuries. Based on a complaint by Dhanapal, Padalur police registered a case and arrested Sathyamurthy (31) of E Pudhur, the driver of the other omni bus that rammed the stationary vehicle from behind.
The injured were shifted to Tiruchy Government Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of Amudha and her son Anand were handed over to Nedunchezhian (29), the eldest son of the deceased councillor.
Amudha’s husband, who was the headmaster of a government school in Uppupparai, had died two years ago. They had two daughters, who have been married off, and two sons, one of whom died in the accident.
Her elder son Nedunchezhian was looking after the family business.
Amutha reportedly went to Chennai for a post-operative review of her eye done recently.
Local AIADMK functionaries paid homage to the mortal remains of Amudha and her son.
