KOCHI: The declaration of code of conduct for the Piravom bypoll will delay the annual budget presentation of the Kochi Corporation. It will now be rescheduled for March end or April first week.Earlier, the civic body had invited budget proposals from various organisations like the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kerala Management Association. The Mayor had also personally invited proposals from the public. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and other corporation officials will go through the proposals and consider whether they are feasible. It is learnt that this year’s budget is going to give more importance to projects that can be implemented on a public-private partnership. Opposition leader of the Kochi Corporation council, K J Jacob, has said that the civic body should come up with a budget that addressed the basic issues of the city. “We asked the same last year. But nothing was done. This year we hope that the corporation will rectify its mistakes and come up with a budget that will fit within the revenue framework of the civic body,” Jacob said. The annual income of the corporation is estimated at Rs 120 crore. “The budget proposals should be made considering this annual income rather than going in for huge capital intensive projects. Such big projects usually never take off.”
