HYDERABAD: Knowing that it is going to fight a losing battle, the ruling Congress on Thursday cleared the candidature of Sangam Srinivasa Goud, a BC hoping that he would dent into the victory margin of TRS candidate Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy in Banswada byelection in Nizamabad district. Of the 1.6 lakh voters in Banswada around 80,000 voters are BCs. Declaring the candidature of Goud at Gandhi Bhavan, PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana said: "Every party wants to win in every election. Congress is a political party and it has to contest the election. That is why we have announced our candidate."
However, sources close to Botcha clarified later that PCC chief did not say that the Congress candidate would definitely win the byelection, which was necessitated by the resignation of Pocharam. The ruling Congress would tell the people of Telangana during the byelection campaign that Congress was not against Telangana state demand. "The byelection is caused because of the Uturn taken by the Opposition TDP," Satyanarayana told reporters. TDP MLA Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy resigned from Banswada and joined the TRS opposing the ambiguous stand of the TDP.
