Cong-PDP impasse hits quake relief
J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed met PM Manmohan Singh to resolve the leadership issue in the state.

New Delhi:The deadlock over the chief ministership of Jammu & Kashmir continues for a second day on Monday with J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed camping in the Capital.

Congress and the People's Democratic Party in J&K agreed to share the seat when they won the 2002 Assembly elections.

PDP's Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was appointed the Chief Minister.

Under the power transfer agreement, a PDP candidate was to be the CM for the first three years and transfer power to Congress for the remaining period.

The transfer is due on November 2, 2005.

However Mufti met with Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday night to ask for an extension.

Sunday witnessed heavy lobbying in New Delhi from Ahmed Patel and Pranab Mukherjee for the Congress camp and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti for the PDP.

The two PDP leaders also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

During the 40-minute meeting, Mufti apprised the Prime Minister of his views on transfer of power in the State.

He also told the PM of relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken by his government in the aftermath of the October 8 quake which has badly affected the Uri and Tangdhar areas.

?Mufti has discussed his point of view with Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. They in turn have decided to meet with senior party leaders to discuss the issue of the transfer of power in J&K. A decision will be taken shortly,? Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

The aftereffects of the stalemate between the Congress and the PDP are being felt in the Kashmir valley.

With the administration uncertain as to who will head the state, it is the earthquake relief that has been hit.

What's your reaction?
