KOCHI: In a path-breaking initiative to incorporate the research works done by post graduate students into its projects, the Coconut Development Board has invited application from colleges offering PG courses in Botany, Zoology and Biotechnology. The venture, named ‘Collaborative Research Project’, is aimed at developing the ‘Sankara’ varieties of coconut.The Board will provide technical and financial assistance to the chosen students from 15 colleges. The Board is aiming to produce five lakhs of disease-resistant and highly productive saplings through Artificial Selection, which will be subjected to further research on production and disease resistance, later. The board is eying to reach the target of 5 lakh saplings by 2013-14. Each college will be expected to produce 50,000 saplings. Apart from this, colleges interested in topics such as comprehensive pest control, detection of adulteration in coconut oil and medicinal properties of coconut can also submit their applications.
