KOCHI: The judiciary needs cleansing, opined former Karnataka Lokayukta and Team Anna member Justice Santosh Hegde. There needs a change in the pace of judicial delivery system as there is no proportion between justice and delay, he pointed out.Speaking at the ‘Shaping Young Minds Programme,’ jointly organised by the All-India Management Association (AIMA) and the Kerala Management Association (KMA) in Kochi on Tuesday, Hegde said there was a need to increase the number of judges and courts in the country and provide more infrastructure for early disposal of cases. Pointing out the inordinate delay in processing cases, Hegde said: “We need to improve the system, which is very pathetic now. One of the factors which encourages corruption is judiciary.” Referring to the corruption case against former Union Minister Sukhram, Hegde said the trial had taken 10 years. The rate of corruption has also increased, he said. In 1985-86, when the Bofors case hit the headlines, the corruption involved was said to be about Rs 66 crore, while it has touched Rs 1.76 lakh crore. “The Army chief said there was an attempt to bribe him. I know about corruption in the judiciary. I need not say anything about corruption in the other two institutions,” he said.India with a 5000-year-old culture is standing 84th in the list of 142 countries in the grading of honesty.Asked about the high cost of maintenance for the safety of Mumbai attack case accused Ajmal Kasab, Hegde said that Kasab should be treated like an ordinary criminal.“On one side you want to eliminate him (Kasab) and on the other you want to protect him from those who are trying to eliminate him,” Hegde said. Earlier Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder and vice-chairman of naukri.com inaugurated the programme.
