BANGALORE: Communication for Development and Learning, a Bangalore based NGO conferred Charkha Awards to appreciate, encourage and strengthen development journalism in regional language newspapers.The awards were presented by His Excellency Governor of Karnataka, H R Bhardwaj, at Raj Bhavan on Friday.The Charkha Mentor Award was given to Rajashekhar Koti from Mysore for Andolana, a daily. The newspaper has been the voice of people of Mysore, Mandya and parts of rural Bangalore. The daily is widely popular for voicing local issues.Speaking after receiving the award, Koti said that he was happy that many new journalists have taken the initiative to work for regional newspapers and help them flourish. Charkha Awards was given to eight regional journalists for their work on issues related to Women, Water, HIV/AIDS, Environment, Disability and Child Rights.Vasudev Sharma, Karanth Peraje, Swetha Pangannaya, T R Chandrashekhar, Dr Leela Sampige, Sharada Gopal and Kudli Gururaj were some of the recipients.Speaking at the event, the Governor said that there needs to more awareness about the potential of Kannada literature. “ It is much more useful to read Kannada papers than the English newspapers”, he said while talking about the importance of regional papers. He said these awards were important in ensuring that excellence in the field of regional journalism are appreciated.The Charkha Awards are supported by NGOs like Arghyam, UNICEF, ATREE and Mahila Samkhya Karnataka.Hejje Saalu, a collection of award winning articles was released.
