Pulwama: Four civilians were allegedly injured in an army firing at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, sparking protests and clashes between civilians and the security forces on Wednesday. The locals say army personnel opened fire after a vehicle carrying injured soldiers to hospital got stuck in a traffic jam.
The army has denied firing on civilians. The soldiers in the vehicle were injured in an encounter at a nearby village, which left one Lashkar-e-Taiba militant dead. Curfew was imposed in Pulwama, a district in South Kashmir, as a result of the protests and clashes.
"Curfew has been imposed in Pulwama town as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order," Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Shafat Noor said. The army allegedly opened fire to chase away stone-pelting protesters as they were evacuating their injured colleagues.
Noor said a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the incident that led to the firing by security forces in the town and consequent injuries to the civilians. Two of the injured civilians were referred to SKIMS hospital for specialised treatment, the official said, adding that their condition is stated to be stable now.
