CHENNAI: An Iraqi woman has found relief from her cardiac problems, after a team at the MIOT Hospital in the city performed a complex procedure to remove blockages in her heart. Nisreen Tahr Mawlood (63), from Northern Iraq, suffered worsening chest pain for three months, even with minimal activity. After a coronary angiogram found that she had multiple blockages in all three vessels, she was asked to undergo cardiac bypass Surgery. However, Nisreen was reluctant to undergo surgery and opted for coronary angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), rather than the usual coronary bypass surgery. According to Nisreen, doctors in her country refused to do the procedure as they considered it to be technically difficult. Having heard of MIOT’s new advanced heart centre, Nisreen flew down to the city to consult with the interventional cardiologists. In spite of persistent pain, Nisreen insisted on PCI or continuing with her treatment. After much counseling and warning about the high risks, doctors agreed to go ahead with the surgery. On March 31, doctors undertook the complex procedure, done over three hours. The patient was implanted with six of the latest imported third generation drug eluting stents in all three vessels. Following the successful procedure, a very satisfied and happy patient returned to Iraq four days after her surgery.
