A child died and two others were taken ill on Friday apparently due to the presence of toxic gas in a sewer in Delhi.

New Delhi: A child died and two others were taken ill on Friday apparently due to the presence of toxic gas inside a sewer pit in which they had entered for rag-picking, while two policemen also fell sick trying to rescue them.

Police said the incident occurred at around 1800 hrs IST in Pitampura area.

Three children -- Rubial (11), Arjun (15) and Sonu (8) went down the sewer pit for rag-picking but fell unconscious apparently due presence of some poisonous gas inside, police said.

Local residents alerted the police and three constables entered the pit for rescuing the children but two of them also fell unconscious.

DCP North-West NS Bundela then went to the spot with other personnel and took out all the five -- the three children and the two policemen -- Vijay Singh and Anil Kumar.

Police said while Rubial died, the other four were now out of danger after treatment at BR Ambedkar hospital.
