At least 39 people got injured as the Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed near Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours of Friday.

At least 39 people got injured as the 12685 Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed near Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours of Friday. The incident occurred at around 2 am.

As many as three passengers were admitted to a nearby hospital till last report came in while the others, who suffered injuries, were given first aid.

Following the incident, an additional coach was attached to the train, which later left for Mangalore.

The mishap occurred around 2 AM when four bogies of the Mangalore-bound train jumped the tracks at Puvanur near Vriddhachalam in Cuddalore district, about 200 km from Chennai, police and southern Railway officials said.

Rail traffic was disrupted on the busy route. Several trains were halted at nearby stations. They were later operated on alternative route but were running late, officials added.

Senior police officials said the district administration was taking stock of the situation, with steps being taken to make alternative arrangements for some stranded passengers to be ferried to nearest rail and bus terminals to proceed to their respective destinations.
