New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh, in addition to the Rs 3 lakh announced by the Assam government, to the next of kin of those killed in the ULFA violence.
The Prime Minister made the announcement when a group of six MPs from Assam met the Prime Minister to discuss the situation in the violence-torn state. The team was led by Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev and Union Minister of State BK Handique.
The Prime Minister also told the MPs that the Centre has decided to rush 1,000 more paramilitary troops to the state to join the anti-insurgency operations. Promising all possible help from the Centre, Singh told the MPs that he was seized of the situation.
The 10 new companies of paramilitary forces will be sent to Assam in addition to the 20 companies of Central forces already in Assam. The delegation of MPs asked the Prime Minister to render all possible help to restore normalcy and communal harmony in the state.
Singh told the MPs that he had asked the Assam Government to take all possible action in this regard, an official release said.
