CBI to widen probe in J&K sex racket
The High Court tells CBI to speed up its investigation in the Kashmir sex scandal after a second arrest was made.

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Monday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the role of politicians, bureaucrats and security officials accused in the Srinagar sex scandal.

It has directed the CBI to widen and speed up its probe in the sex racket, saying a team of sleuths should be formed solely to question the alleged kingpin Sabeena.

The court made this observation after the CBI informed a division bench of Justices Hakeem Imtiyaz Hussain and B A Kirmani that one more arrest had been made in connection with the scandal.

The judges said the agency should speed up its investigation as time was of the essence in this case.

They asked the CBI to reinforce the strength of the team probing the racket and to open up investigations on different fronts with separate teams.

One team should interrogate Sabeena, who has not been cooperating with the CBI, and another team should look into smaller sex rackets.

Five persons, including Sabeena, were arrested earlier in connection with the sex racket that sparked widespread protests in the Kashmir Valley in May.

The court asked the CBI to take note of previous cases of a similar nature registered by police against Sabeena as many of the accused in them had been named in the statement made by 15-year-old Yasmeena, one of the victims of the racket.

CBI counsel Shabir A Naik informed the court that out of 12 people subjected to an identification parade, three were identified by Yasmeena.

Since one of the identified was already under arrest, the police arrested the other after the parade, the third was not directly involved in the scandal, Naik said.
