During the search operation, officers from the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch also reached the residence of Dr. Debashish Som, Demonstrator of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

These actions come after a complaint filed three days ago by Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, alleging corruption and irregularities at the institution, with specific accusations against Dr. Debashish Som.

On Saturday, the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, acting on orders from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation began after a single bench of the High Court directed the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption at the medical college.

Previously, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Calcutta High Court visited the CBI office at Nizam Palace and handed over key documents related to the case. Acting swiftly on this information, the CBI registered the FIR and submitted a copy to the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Saturday.

The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to provide a progress report on the investigation, which is due on September 17.

The medical college came under media scrutiny following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a seminar hall on August 9, for which traffic police volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested.

On the directions of the Calcutta High Court the CBI has registered cases into the killing as well as alleged financial irregularities.

Prohibitory Orders Near RG Kar Hospital Extended Till Aug 31

Kolkata Police has extended prohibitory orders near the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for an additional week, until August 31.

The orders, which were first imposed on August 18, restrict meetings and gatherings of more than five people in the designated area.

Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday issued a statement confirming the extension of Section 163 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) around the hospital. The prohibitory orders cover the area from Belgachia Road-J K Mitra crossing to some parts of Shyambazar five point crossing belt in North Kolkata.

The extension is intended to prevent disturbances and maintain peace and order in the area. The decision follows ongoing unrest related to the recent rape-murder of a woman doctor at the hospital, which has led to significant agitation.
