CHENNAI: Caritas India, the social arm of the Catholic Bishop’s conference of India completes 50 years of service in bringing inclusive development for the poor and the marginalised. To commemorate their Golden Jubilee, they organised a two-day symposium on ‘Inclusive Development — Social Equity, an imperative for Good Governance’ at the Pastoral Centre, this week. About 300 delegates are expected to participate in the symposium. As a part of the celebrations, Caritas India has planned to conduct various national-level workshops on various thematic issues, besides 10 regional Golden Jubilee celebrations and one national celebration in Delhi in January 2012. Fr. Frederick D’ Souza, designated executive director, Caritas India, said: “This two-day symposium will help us come up with new ideas to arrive at strategic decisions and to promote good governance. We also plan to interact with the State governments and also the Central Government  in bring about social equity to the marginalised.” Caritas India collaborates with  more than 300 NGOs working within the framework of Millennium Development Goals. As part of tsunami relief and rehabilitation, Caritas India had constructed 13,420 houses, out of which 8,000 were constructed in Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, Caritas India had reached out to 16,317 villages, and had organised 4,10,317 rural women SHGs, farmer’s club, civil fora, watershed committees and fishermen groups.
