KANCHEEPURAM: For Opposition Leader of Tamil Nadu Assembly Vijaykanth, it was a day of thanksgiving to Kanchi Kamakshi Amman on Sunday. Accompanied by wife Premalatha, he visited the famous temple for the second time this year. His first visit was on January 29, when he was a lone member of the DMDK in the previous Assembly and his political fortunes not yet certain. Now as a proud Opposition Leader with a political backup of 29 MLAs, Vijaykanth drove in a grey Mercedes Benz to the temple around 9.50 am. It was a private visit sans the security drills. “I have been coming to this temple since the time of Amman Koil Kizhakale (a 1986 film). But now that I am in politics, my visits become too visible,” he said. He was in the temple for about 25 minutes. During his January visit, a teary-eyed Vijaykanth lighted two lamps in front of Varahi Amman. Legend has it that anyone who cries sincerely before Varahi Amman, the commander-in-chief of Kamakshi’s army, and invokes her name thrice would never go empty-handed. Vijaykanth said it was due to the abundant blessings of Kamakshi Amman that he had now become a political force to reckon with. Hence, he was visiting this temple to register his thanks. This time around, he also offered prayers and lighted a lamp at the shrine of the eight-handed Rajya Shyamala, the prime minister and also chief advisor to Kamakshi.
