BANGALORE: Working at snail’s pace is probably how the civic bodies like to function in the city. Invariably every civic development work that is taken up in the Garden City is delayed and as a result has missed a number of deadlines. Intriguingly, the  authorities have no qualms in eating their own words and failing to keep their word.Even after a month,  Nazir, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) executive engineer’s promise of completing the replacement of sanitary pipelines between Hosmat hospital and Midford Garden has fallen flat. City Express had published a report titled, ‘BWSSB needs another 45 days’ on September 7, wherein the engineer had claimed that of the total length of 690 metres, 350 metres of the new 450mm dia RCC pipeline was already laid. “The work will be completed by October 15,” he had stated. However, the road is still unusable and blocked to commuters. The budget for the project according to the engineer was slated at Rs 90 lakhs. “This road has been a mess for a very long time now. Commuting on the road is a nightmare. The area is covered with mud and thanks to the recent rains, the entire area is in a mess. Why cant the authorities keep their word? It was nice to see the BWSSB flex sheet tied on various junctions around the area, but this delay is unacceptable. How much longer are we supposed to suffer for someone else’s lackadaisical attitude?” questioned, Kulwinder, a resident of Brunton Road. While the executive engineer refused to comment on the situation. From the look of it, the officials have found yet another reason to blame. This time they seem to have made the recent showers their scape goat. Assistant executive engineer, Uday Shankar blamed the rainfall for the delay in the work stated that had it not been for the rain they would have definitely completed the work.“Due to heavy rain, the earth is collapsing which is why we can not do anything right now. However, only 250 metres of the pipeline is left to be replaced and we will complete the work by the end of the month,” he said.
