Chandigarh: A buffalo that fell into a deep open well in a village in Chandigarh was rescued in an operation reminiscent of the one employed to save five-year-old Prince from a Haryana tube-well pit.

Several villagers, the fire brigade and police personnel were involved in efforts to get the buffalo out of a 30-foot-deep well in Kajheri village late on Friday.

Fire brigade personnel were able to tie a rope around the animal after being lowered into the well. The recovery truck of the local traffic police then managed to pull it out after considerable struggle.

The animal's owners, Jagbir Singh and Inderjit Kaur, expressed their gratitude to all those who had helped save the buffalo.

"Everyone thought that the animal was lost. It means a lot to us as it gives six litres of milk every day," said Singh after the successful rescue operation.
