HYDERABAD:The Prisons department is planning to shift the only Borstal school in the state from Nizamabad to Hyderabad by end March because of the lack of inmates, making the presence of 25 personnel in the school redundant. As of now, there are seven young offenders undergoing training in different trades. One inmate No. 658, M Srinivasa Dora will be set free by December 23, leaving only six behind. B Sunil Kumar, additional inspectorgeneral (Prisons) said, "We are shifting the Borstal school to Hyderabad as it is not located centrally. After shifting the school, the department will shift all adolescent offenders who are in other district and subjails to the Borstal school."The Nizamabad Borstal school was established in 1976. It has trained about 750 juvenile criminals so far in trades like plumbing, carpentry, motor winding and tailoring which could help them settle in life. Training is imparted in 11 trades depending on interest of the inmates, said Dr M Varaprasad, school superintendent. "There used to be about 150 inmates in 1990. But every year, the number of inmates has been decreasing," he added.Earlier, there used to be three Borstal schools in the state but the Visakhapatnam and Anantapur schools were closed down in 1985.
