New Delhi: Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has said that they have found animal residue in samples of Ayurvedic medicine purportedly manufactured by yoga guru Swami Ramdev’s Divya Yog Mission.
The samples were submitted to the Ministry by CPI-M leader Brinda Karat who alleged that the medicines and contained bones and animal residue.
Karat's accusation has enraged the Swami Ramdev's supporters in Bhopal. Taking to the streets, they protested against Karat's claims and shouted slogans in support of Ramdev.
The Divya Yog Mission is also planning to challenge Karat's claims at the highest levels.
"We want a CBI inquiry instituted, nothing Karat is saying makes any sense," Acharya Bal Krishna, Divya Yog Mission trustee, said.
Though the Swami's supporters are going ballistic over Karat's claims, a former employee of the Divya Yog claims he was asked to leave when he protested the use of animal residue in the ashram's products.
"The medicines had animal remains. I have used them in the medicines myself. When we opposed this, we were beaten and sacked," Deepu Bhatt, former employee of Divya Yog said.
But street protests against Karat's claims are matched by official backing as well.
The Education Minister of Rajasthan said he was with Swami Ramdev allegeing that allegations was the handiwork of rival companies.
"Rival ayurvedic companies have made these charges. This is just a claim generated by other ayurvedic companies and large multinational pharmacy companies whose sales are going doing because of (his) products," Ghanshyam Tiwari, Education Minister of Rajasthan, said.
The Health Ministry will now check whether the samples submitted by Karat are those actually made by Divya Yog.
