New Delhi: In Karnataka, 4,000 prisoners in Bangalore Central Jail went on a 12 hour fast to protest the Cauvery Tribunal's verdict.

Only the sick and elderly prisoners did not participate in the fast, but all others stayed away from food.

Meanwhile, Kannada activists also protested against a cinema hall showing a Tamil film.

Tamil channels are no longer being shown on cable television in Karnataka.

On Wednesday, over 50 pro-Kannada activists tried to block the Bangalore Airport in protest against the verdict. Security agencies had to detain them to ensure normal functioning of the airport.

On the same day, almost 16,000 lawyers boycotted work and went on a strike under the banner of the Bangalore Advocate Association affecting proceedings at the high court.

All schools and colleges were closed for some days in Bangalore as well as in the Cauvery basin districts like Mysore, Mandya and Chamrajnagar.

Transport authorities have said that private buses have been withdrawn from service in Bangalore. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation too had suspended all its inter-state bus services between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Sources said the decision to suspend the services was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident.

The services were suspended on routes, Salem-Banglore, Salem-Mysore, Erode-Banglore and Erode-Mysore.

Presently, the buses are plying till the Karnataka border, sources added.

The Cauvery Tribunal has ordered that Karnataka will get 270 billion cubic feet of water and Tamil Nadu will receive 419 billion feet of water, in a ruling aimed at ending a century-old dispute over the shared river.
