New Delhi: The BJP Parliamentary board, the highest decision making authority of the party, is meeting Thursday evening in Delhi to take stock of party's performance in the Assembly polls held in five states last month and to send observers for the election of leader of opposition in MP, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
Assembly session in MP and Chhattisgarh begin next week. Hence the party legislatures in three states have to elect their leader in the respective state legislative Assemblies.
The cases of Vasundhara Raje, Shivraj Singh Chouhan (who is also a member of the Parliamentary board) in Rajasthan and MP respectively have been strengthened by the BJP's respectable defeat in the two states.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan for one has already expressed his preference to stay back in Bhopal and pursue state politics.
In Chhattisgarh particularly, where the party was completely routed, sources say that the BJP is looking at several options to fill in the shoes of the LoP. One of them is Dharamlal Kaushik, an OBC leader of Kurmi community. The BJP suffered huge losses in the central rice bowl of the state where the OBC population is more than 40 percent of the total electorate.
MP assembly session starts from January 7 and the Chhattisgarh Assembly session from January 9.
Farm distress and young voters, the two sections of society that gave a strong signal against the BJP in the recent elections are also likely to be the focus of the members of Parliamentary board, which include the party president Amit Shah, Modi, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari, Ramlal, among others.
BJP's Parliamentary board meeting assumes significance given several important political events scheduled later this month - the two day BJP's national executive to be held on January 11-12, PM's R-Day speech on 26th and the Kumbh mela which PM is likely to attend and where VHP's Dharam Sansad on Ram Mandir is also scheduled.
