Kolkata: The differences between NDA partners BJP and Trinamool Congress sharpened on Tuesday when the saffron party dared TC supremo Mamata Banerjee to leave NDA.

"Mamata Banerjee has violated the alliance agreement by joining hands with Congress in Malda parliamentary by-elections which will strengthen hands of the UPA," BJP state General Secretary Rahul Sinha said.

"If Trinamool Congress thinks that BJP has become a liability, it is free to leave NDA. We in BJP also feel that Trinamool Congress has turned out to be our liability," he added.

Trinamool Congress also adopted a tough stand with its general secretary Partha Chatterjee saying, "Such a statement by a BJP state functionary does not auger well for the alliance."

The stand-off between the NDA partners was sparked by the Trinamool Congress supremo's decision to support Congress candidate A H Khan Chowdhury, brother of veteran Congress leader ABA Ghani Khan Chowdhury, whose death neccessitated the by-polls in Malda next month.

Congress also reciprocated the gesture by announcing that it would not field candidates against Trinamool Congress nominees for the bye-election to Katwa Lok Sabha seat and Bongaon assembly seats.
