Bihar recorded the highest state gross domestic product during recession.

New Delhi: Economically very backward Bihar has emerged as the fastest growing state clocking an astonishingly high 11.44 per cent growth rate during 2008-09, an achievement its Chief Minister Nitish Kumar attributed to improved law and order situation.

Among the 18 states and Union Territories of which data is available, Bihar recorded the highest state gross domestic product (SGDP) in a year when the global financial meltdown pulled down the country's economic growth rate to 6.7 per cent from nine per cent.

"Improved law and order situation has attracted industrialists to invest in the state contributing to faster economic growth," Kumar told reporters today in Patna.

Bihar, once considered as the one of the most backward states with ever-worsening law and order situation, can do wonders if special category status if granted to it by the Centre, he added.

According to a recent report compiled by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), which has data of 18 out of 32 states and the Union Territories, Bihar recorded the highest growth of 11.44 per cent in the last fiscal. However, among the major states, data are not available for Gujarat and Maharashtra.

"Almost all states have provided their state GDP data for 2007-08, but for 2008-09 fiscal, about 8-10 states have provided the GDP growth data", said Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation Pronab Sen here told.
