BANGALORE: ‘Victory, power and courage’, is what the newly built horse sculptures across the city are supposed to represent. The inscribed plate on these statues state that the statues represent the strides Bangalore has made in all spheres. The BBMP has installed such sculptures at four places, including Mekhri Circle and Race Course Road with the intention of ‘beautifying’ the city. There are also plans of installing similar statues at 198 other places across the city. C S Krishna Setty, chairman of Karnataka Lalithakala Academy, lamenting over the poor art sense of BBMP, said that these grotesque statues ‘do not represent anything’. “These statues are destroying the image of the city and show the artists in bad light,” he said. He further stated that they are cliched statues put up in various parts of the world. He also urged the government to remove these statues immediately. He expressed the urgency for the formation of Karnataka Art Commission which would consist of eminent and experienced artists, sculptors, art critics and architects. “The commission must also be given the rights to make any decisions related to the field of art. By taking up such steps, we will be able to bring out the real beauty of the city,” he added.
