BARGARH: Dhanu Yatra of Bargarh, world’s biggest open-air theatre, is all set to start on Friday. For the 11-day Yatra, Bargarh, the cultural centre of western Odisha, has transformed temporarily into Mathurapuri, the capital of the kingdom of mythological demon king Kansa. And all eyes are on the demon king, who would continue to rule over the town till January 9. Kansa is considered the main attraction of the Yatra, and artistes of the region vie with each other for the coveted role of the demon king. Though Dhanu Yatra is staged at various places in the region, the one at Bargarh is the most popular and sees the involvement of thousands of people. It is referred to as the world’s biggest open-air theatre as the whole area transforms into the kingdom of Kansa and every resident of the town becomes a subject of the king. Organising committee member Surendra Hota said that a troupe from Russia would be performing at the Dhanu Yatra for the first time.To infuse more fun into the Yatra this time, the ORMAS is holding a State-level Handloom exhibition-cum-sale. Around 50 weavers societies from across the State are participating in the expo at the Bargarh mini-stadium. This apart, there will be a ‘Meena Bazaar’ and performances by cultural troupes. Security arrangements have been put in place in the town.
