New Delhi: West Bengal Police on Wednesday stopped a Trinamool Congress-backed rally in Singur after the state government warned it would prevent the violation of prohibitory orders at the site of the proposed Tata Motors' small car factory.
Police stopped the rally – taken out by the Krishi Jami Raksha Committee in protest against the acquisition of agricultural land by the government for industries – at Bajemelia village.
The orders barring rallies and meetings were re-imposed the day after Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee ended her fast against the acquisition of land on December 28.
Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy told reporters at the secretariat in Kolkata that the government was aware that political leaders were visiting Singur and organising meetings and processions even though prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were in force there.
He said the government was watching the situation and would not hesitate to take steps to enforce the orders.
Hooghly district's Additional Superintendent of Police Asit Pal said police had not taken action so far because they were not aware of any violation of the prohibitory orders.
The Trinamool Congress, which started a weeklong awareness campaign on Wednesday, said it would not sit for talks with the government on land acquisition unless the prohibitory orders at Singur were withdrawn.
The All India Forward Bloc, a partner of the ruling Left Front, has also favoured the withdrawal of the orders.
Roy said the house of a leader of the Trinamool-backed Krishi Jami Bachao Committee at Singur was attacked on Tuesday night. One person was arrested in this connection, he said.
Refusing to identify the attackers, Roy said they had a "political colour".
