MANKOMBU: Noted agticultural scientist M S Swaminathan has commended the school that nurtured his family and villagefolk right from the days of pre-Independence Maharaja days.Inaugurating the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Avittom Thirunal Government Higher Secondary School here on Monday, Swaminathan said that the schools like this paved the way for making Kuttanad the granary of Travancore and later of Kerala.“Now you have institutions like a Cochin University Engineering College, Kuttanad, at Pulinkunnu. The area is also graced by the annual Rajiv Gandhi Trophy Boat race at Pulinkunnu that has placed the region among the much sought after tourist attractions” Swaminathan said.But Kuttnad has gone back on its paddy production on account of natural reasons as well as man-made reasons. We have introduced a Kuttanad Package to raise the region to its old glory. We had a review of the implementation of the Package at Alappuzha Collectorate. I am satisfied about the progress,” he said.Swaminathan announced a donation of Rs 50 lakh for the development of the school and another Rs 2 lakh to encourage students to leap ahead in academic brilliance. Both come from his MP fund.Thomas John MLA presided. Celebrations comimittee chairman Dr. K. Madhukkumar, K.A Pararameswaran, Dr. K.V Krishnadas and others received the guest. Old boys like C K Sivandandan IAS and Dr. N.N Panicker, Block Panchayat president V K Venugopal and Pincipal Chinnamma, PTA president Jayan Champakulam, Secretary P. Radhakrishna Pillai were among those who participated.
