New Delhi: Self-styled godman Asaram's supporters on Saturday launched an attack on CNN-IBN sister concern IBN7's reporter Bhawani Deora. An IBN7 video journalist has also been injured in the attack.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari condemned the incident and urged the Rajasthan government to take strict action in the matter and bring those guilty to book. "I hope strictest action is taken in the matter. The law is above everyone and does not discriminate between an ordinary citizen and any godman," Tewari said.
He added that the government of Rajasthan is extremely responsible and expressed hope that matters will be brought to a logical conclusion.
Broadcast editors association General Secretary NK Singh called the incident an attack on the democratic set-up and demanded immediate arrest of Asaram as well as protection for the journalists in present circumstances. "I place two demands, first the immediate arrest of Asaram and second immediate protection for journalists to ensure such a case doesn't happen again," Singh said.
Aggrieved and agitated by the violent measures taken up by Asaram supporters, IBN7 Managing Editor Ashutosh called this is an attack on the freedom of the press and said that such attacks to terrorise the media will not be successful. "We will not be intimidated by such tactics of Asaram supporters," Ashutosh said.
Reacting sharply to the act to muzzle the voice of the media, IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai called this an attack on the entire media and not just an attack on one channel. He questioned the self styled guru and his supporters and asked "Is this how the supporters of a 'godman' behave?"
