Assam Floods: Meet Karimganj's Sujan Roy Who Is Working With Govt Rescue Teams
The Assam floods have affected more than 300 villages in five residential areas of Karimganj district. The administration has opened about 60 shelters so far.

The Kushiyara River and its tributaries in the Karimganj district, Assam have flooded following incessant rainfall over the last few days. Other districts, including Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang and Kokrajhar, are also affected by the flood.

The floods have affected more than 300 villages in five residential areas of Karimganj district. The administration has opened about 60 shelters so far. About 2,00,000 people have been affected by the floods so far. The management officials are on the rescue mission everywhere. According to official data, 82 villages in Nilam Bazar, 71 in Ramkrishnanagar, 22 in Badarpur and 50 in North Karimganj have been affected due to the floods. Overall, 235 villages in the districts are under flood water.

The government has already started rescue work, while a group of youths are also working to rescue the flood victims. Two teams of disaster allies have been divided to help the flood victims. One name is Sujan Deb Roy, who has stood by the people from the coronavirus pandemic to the floods in Shillong and Karimganj in 2022. He is now working with government rescue teams.

The Aapda Mitra team is also formed in this situation, who are engaged in providing service to people. Currently, two teams of Sujan are working together. Those who could not make it to the shelters have been trapped inside their homes and living in indescribable conditions.

Earlier, while talking to PTI, Karimganj District Commissioner Mridul Yadav said, “Severe floods have been reported in Karimganj. All of our three rivers, Kushiyara, Longai and Singla, are above the danger level, due to which we have opened 30 relief camps. 9,212 people are taking shelter in them and close to 1.5 lakh people have been affected in the villages.”

According to The Assam Tribune, 2,34,535 animals have been impacted, and a 3238.8-hectare crop area has been inundated. Additionally, the district has seen numerous landslides and severe erosion in various locations.
