Arjun Singh, family face CBI probe in dowry case
Girl's father claims Arjun Singh's family had asked for a Mercedes car from him.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Government on Monday decided to recommend a CBI inquiry into a complaint of alleged torture of the wife of Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh's grandson for dowry.

"The state government has decided to make a request to the Centre to get the matter inquired by CBI," Home Secretary Javed Ahmed told reporters here on Monday evening.

A case under the Anti-dowry Act has been registered against Singh, his wife Beena Singh, son Abhimanu Singh and grandson Abhijeet Singh and three others at Chandausi police station in Moradabad district on Sunday evening.

The case was registered on the direction of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandausi, on a complaint by Madhvendra Singh, father of the Union Minister's granddaughter-in-law Priyanka Singh, who married Abhijeet.

Madhvendra Singh has alleged his daughter's in-laws had been demanding a Mercedes car and a flat from him and his daughter was being tortured when their demand was not met.

Arjun Singh's son Abhimanyu claimed his son had filed a divorce petition on April 2 this year and the allegation of demanding dowry levelled by the girl's family was a 'retaliatory' act.

"Now after four months, this (filing of a dowry case) I would say is more retaliatory than anything else," he said. "We had filed a divorce petition on April 2 and willingly the girl had gone to her parents. We went all the way to Delhi and left her with her parents in good health," he said.
