Protesting against the attack on one of them, hawkers and their families, from the vicinity of Srinivasam complex, staged a protest before the office of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) and gheraoed the municipal commissioner T Prasad on Saturday morning.
Condemning the attack on a hawker Lokesh Reddy by municipal works inspector Munikrishna and his aggressive behaviour on Friday evening, the hawkers prevented the commissioner from entering his office.
It is learnt that the hawkers were ordered to remove their pushcarts from the Srinivasam complex on Friday evening and Munikrishna allegedly attacked one of the hawkers Lokesh Reddy, pouring hot water on him. Lokesh suffered serious injuries on his left hand.
Prasad expressing his inability to address their issues, left the place without attending to his work.
According to AITUC leader P Murali, about 50 families have been running kiosks opposite Srinivasam complex for a long time. But last month the corporation removed these ‘encroachments’.
But the hawkers continued their trade using pushcarts. On Friday, civic workers forcibly attempted to remove the pushcarts from the place which led to a scuffle between them and the hawkers.
The striking hawkers called off the protest in the afternoon, as commissioner sent a message through the police that he would look into the issue at the earliest.
