The discord between Kerala Congress (M) leader and Chief Whip PC George and Congress MLA T N Prathapan over Nelliyampathi issue is snowballing into a major crisis for the UDF. As George came under attack from more Congress leaders who are irked by the stoic silence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Defence Minister AK Antony stepped in to cool the tempers on Saturday.
He said, “The verbal duel between Prathapan and George will not create a crisis in either the government or the UDF. Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will discuss the issue and solve the problems.”
But indicating a rift in the UDF, KC(J) leader Johny Nelloor and K R Aravindakshan of CMP backed P C George and criticised Congress leader V D Satheesan for his remarks the other day. What started as mudslinging between two leaders has now escalated to such a level that even the very functioning of the UDF sub-committee on Nelliyampathi is threatened. A team of six UDF MLAs, T N Prathapan, V D Satheeshan, Hiby Eden, V T Balram (Congress), M V Sreyams Kumar (SJ-D) and K M Shaji (IUML), is planning a parallel visit to Nelliyamapathi on Monday.
Johny Nelloor and K R Aravindakshan alleged that some Congress leaders are trying to humiliate the UDF sub-committee and said that a complaint would be lodged with Chandy and Chennithala regarding the issue. UDF convenor P P Thankachan said, “It is high time George realised the worth of his position and acted in a mature manner.”
