New Delhi: In an incident similar to the much-publicised Imarana case, the father-in-law of a woman was booked for allegedly raping her along with five others at a village in the Muzaffarnagar district.
Acting under the direction of a court in Muzaffarnagar on Friday, police registered the case of gangrape against the woman's father-in-law Nemichand, brother-in-law Ompal and four others under sections 376 (rape), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
The direction came from Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramu Rao after the victim moved the court accusing the police of not registering her complaint over the incident which took place four months ago in Nayagaon village of the district.
In a similar case, a court had last year convicted one Ali Mohammad of raping his daughter-in-law Imrana, a mother of five.
The case had hit the headlines after a local community panchayat had declared her marriage null and void, asking her to treat her husband Nur Ilahi as her son.
After Imrana's plight was highlighted in the national media, the National Commission for Women stepped in and directed the authorities to take action against the 69-year-old Mohammad.
Later, the District and Sessions Court had found Mohammad guilty and sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 8,000 on him.
