CHENNAI: Linking Earth day (April 22) to World Environment Day (June 6) and Vanamahotsav (beginning July 1), the US Consulate General, Chennai, is conducting a series of contests and programmes promoting environmental awareness. To catalyse global environmental activism, the Earth Day Network launched A Billion Acts of Green campaign.
This campaign hopes to inspire simple individual acts and larger organisational initiatives that will positively impact the environment. The goal of the campaign is to register at least one billion environment friendly actions in advance of the Earth Summit that will take place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil,2012
The US Consulate, Chennai, which endorses the campaign, plans to organise a series of events including a blog contest, a video contest, a series of web / video chats, DVCs and a project titled “Smart Recycling” for school children that will help to contribute towards the goal of the one billion acts. The US Consulate is organising these programmes in collaboration with CPR Environmental Education Center (CPREEC), Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN), and the AIESEC (Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales).
Announcing the blog and video contests, US Consul General Andrew Simkin said, “These contests endeavor to harness the Internet’s remarkable capacity for effective public engagement and to encourage young leaders to highlight the importance of environmental protection and individual roles in it.”
